Day 181 (6/30) – Numbers 2:1-34; Matthew 10:1-15
God brought twelve tribes out of Isaac and Jacob. God said twelve princes would come out of Ishmael (Genesis 17:20). Jesus chose twelve apostles. In Revelation, the new Jerusalem is described as having twelve gates, twelve angels, twelve foundations. The names of the twelve tribes are written on the gates and the names of the twelve apostles are written on the foundations. The Tree of Life yields twelve kinds of fruits. This makes me smile. God is indeed in charge of the whole of history from beginning to the end.

Day 180 (6/29) – Numbers 1:32-54; Matthew 9:35-38; Mark 6:7-13
Imagine two million people have left Egypt and are now moving slowly toward Canaan. Under the Old Covenant, the priests are doing their work to protect and defend the law of God and its implementation. Prior to Pentecost, the people seemed like sheep without a shepherd and the disciples were sent out into that multitude. Under the New Covenant, the Spirit of God dwells within all who are in Christ, the Royal Priesthood. Are we functioning well in our neighborhoods?

Day 179 (6/28) – Numbers 1:1-31; Matthew 13:53-58; Mark 6:1-6
This is a key text for us regarding the wall that exists between family members because of Jesus. Many, many Christians are plagued by this most difficult reality. We deal with it in The Engagement Project, but the bottom line is that we need to ask ourselves whose son or daughter or mother or father or brother or sister do we live near whose family members cry over because they cannot reach them, but the wall doesn’t exist for us?

Day 178 (6/27) – Leviticus 25:35-55; Matthew 9:27-34
In the final section of Leviticus, we find God’s provisions for people who have to sell themselves as slaves. This is very foreign to us today, but it was not foreign in those days; in fact, it was a hard reality of life then. The question of slavery to us, in our day, must be understood in its historical context. Here is a good summary of slavery in the Bible. You may want to discuss the interesting connection between this passage in Leviticus and Jesus healing the blind and the mute.

Day 177 (6/26) – Leviticus 27:1-34
We come to the last chapter in Leviticus dealing with how the work of the sanctuary was to be funded through dedicating (vows) themselves, others, animals, homes and land and its produce. Tomorrow we will pick up one section that is left in Leviticus, but congratulations!

Day 176 (6/25) – Leviticus 25:8-34; Luke 8:40-56
Today we read of the “Jubilee”, which literally means “blast of the horn”. It is a wonderful picture of the total redemption Christ has made for us. All debts are forgiven. As a slave to sin, we are set free. We return to our rightful home. It certainly is a cause for celebration. In the practical terms within the shadow of the Old Covenant, you may want to discuss the ways in which this was beneficial to the Israelites.

Day 175 (6/24) – Leviticus 24:10-25:7; Luke 8:40-56
In the famous line from Romeo and Juliet: “What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell just as sweet.” Shakespeare implies that the naming of things is irrelevant. Our passage today tells us that, when it comes to God’s names, He radically disagrees. The names of God are not merely the random collection of letters, but they declare His very nature and are to be treated with holy respect. Unfortunately, we throw them around today with unholy abandon.

Day 174 (6/23) – Leviticus 17:1-16, 24:1-9; Matthew 9:18-26
Every once in a while, Scripture will give us a hint as to what was going on among the people. Here we find that sacrifices were being made to “goat demons”. Interesting, also, is that the Lord calls their actions toward other “gods” as “whoring”. We also note today how the Lord has equated “blood” with the “life” of a living creature. This helps in our understanding of why the “blood of Christ” is so prominently referred to.

Day 173 (6/22) – Leviticus 15:1-33; Mark 5:32-43
Notice the chiastic form of this passage. It is also important to keep in mind that this is part of the shadow that points to the infinite grace of God in Christ Jesus. Some have viewed this passage as the Lord putting a highlight on how sacred is the male/female reproductive capability and how both carry elements necessary for life and its sanctity. And, it helps us better understand the plight of the woman Jesus healed. Watch the video.

Day 172 (6/21) – Leviticus 14:33-57; Luke 8:26-39
When the Israelites no longer lived in tents in the wilderness, their houses in Canaan were subject to things like mold, mildew, fungus, etc. The Lord declared them unclean and, remarkably, how to deal with it for the safety and health of His people. We see the same concern in Jesus for the demon-possessed man of Gerasenes. Note that after Jesus healed him, he was “in his right mind”. Jesus can heal people and cultures that have lost their minds.

Day 171 (6/20) – Leviticus 14:1-32; Matthew 8:28-34
The gods that men make are almost always quite ruthless. They don’t have compassion and they despise the weak. Note today how the Lord provides for the poor man. The video provides a wonderful insight into the place where Jesus brings full healing and cleansing, without all of the old rituals, to a man in a horrible, incurable situation.

Day 170 (6/19) – Leviticus 13:29-59
Verse 45 today reminds us of Luke 17 where lepers stood at a distance from Jesus and cried out for help from Him. There is much speculation about the Hebrew word translated in Leviticus into “leprosy”. But the affliction that we read in verse 45 certainly reminds us of what is today called “Hansen’s disease”. Day 169 (6/18) – Leviticus 13:1-28
Today we read about God’s protection of the community from infectious skin diseases. Community people were willing to be isolated for the protection of others. The word “leprosy” here refers to all kinds of skin diseases not to the one we usually associated with leprosy, which is Hansen’s disease.

Day 168 (6/17) – Leviticus 11:1-47; Mark 5:1-20
We begin now a section in Leviticus (chapters 11-15) that deal with what is clean and what is unclean. We learn in Acts 10 that God has removed these distinctions that were used in the old covenant. This was a shadow, remember. But we maintain the need to ethically distinguish those things in this world that we are to abstain from as God’s people. The event described in Mark is a most amazing thing that teaches us so much about Jesus and man and so many applications for us today. It would make a good discussion. The video is good.

Day 167 (6/16) – Leviticus 4:1-35; Hebrews 13:1-25
I don’t suppose anything could summarize the contrast between the old covenant and the new better than our verse today from Hebrews: “We have an altar from which those who serve the tent have no right to eat.” (verse 10) And, therefore, as verse 6 says: “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?” That wouldn’t be a bad banner to hang in our homes.

Day 166 (6/15) – Leviticus 26:14-46; Hebrews 12:14-29
Our reading today is full of key things. The Lord prescribes His successive disciplines, trying to get His people to turn back to Him. But be sure to note in Hebrews the “...you have not come to” contrasted with the “But you have come to…” and “things that are shaken” with “a kingdom that cannot be shaken”.

Day 165 (6/14) – Proverbs 3:1-35; Hebrews 12:1-13
There is a deep wealth in our texts today. Just these seven words are sufficient to radically change our culture today: “Be not wise in your own eyes” especially when coupled with the next: “fear the Lord, and turn away from evil.” There is the theme of not only the blessing of wisdom, but the blessing of even the Lord’s discipline, consistent from Proverbs to Hebrews.

Day 164 (6/13) – Psalm 39:1-13; Leviticus 26:1-13; Hebrews 11:23-40
I was struck today by the Leviticus passage and the tremendous promises that were given to Israel if they would just follow Him. But, in Hebrews we read of those who were faithful to promises that were even better, those which were to come through the Messiah. We daily give to Him our thankfulness, and with the Psalmist cry “And now, O Lord, for what do I wait? My hope is in you!”

Day 163 (6/12) – Leviticus 7:1-38
As you read through these details today, remember that the Lord created this as a shadow pointing to the eternal in Christ. That is why there is such detail in the commands. God is using the physical to help us understand His Holy nature and the depth of what Christ did for us to satisfy all of this.

Day 162 (6/11) – Leviticus 21:1-22:16
One key thing is before us today: the holiness of God and its implications for the priests. It is important to keep in mind as we read these verses that all of this was a “shadow”, a temporal that was pointing us to the heavenly and that which was to be made perfect by Christ.

Day 161 (6/10) – Psalm 102:1-28; Hebrews 11:1-22
Ah, faith! That which God has granted to us and that by which we now walk. Even, as the Psalmist declares, in the midst of our hearts being “struck down” by the circumstances around us, we walk by faith in Him who is “enthroned forever”, He who created the universe by His “word” out of nothing, He who has prepared a “better country, that is, a heavenly one”.

Day 160 (6/9) – Leviticus 20:1-27; Deuteronomy 19: 14-21; Hebrews 10:19-39
I am deeply saddened by our passages today for it exposes in our culture the depth of the evil that has become so accepted and affirmed.

Day 159 (6/8) – Leviticus 1:1-17; Hebrews 10:1-18; Psalm 40:1-17
Our Hebrews passage today connects the Leviticus passage and the Psalm in a delightful way. It would be good to dwell on these two verses today (1 and 14): “For since the law has but a shadow of the good things to come instead of the true form of these realities, it can never, by the same sacrifices that are continually offered every year, make perfect those who draw near…For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.” Isn’t this amazing? Christ has “perfected for all time” those who are His. That’s worth pondering all day.

Day 158 (6/7) – Leviticus 6:1-30; Hebrews 9:15-28
Today we read another very key passage. In Hebrews we are told that these things we are reading about in Leviticus are “copies” of the heavenly things; they are temporal; they are insufficient, “made with hands”. But Christ is the mediator of a better covenant, with a better sacrifice, one that was eternal, not temporal. He is our High Priest, but the sacrifice He made was not something or someone else. It was Him. And it was sufficient. So sufficient was it, that it was made once and not to be repeated.

Day 157 (6/6) – Leviticus 16:1-34; Hebrews 9:1-14
Today is a major text for us. The Day of Atonement is established and obviously points our minds forward to the Atonement made for us by Christ. Notice how Hebrews refers to the contrast between the old and the new; the first was imperfect, whereas Christ’s was perfect; the first was temporary, Christ’s was for “eternal redemption”. Today we have a cause for rejoicing in deep and humble thankfulness.

Day 156 (6/5) – Leviticus 3:1-17; 17:22-33
The consistent requirement of the sacrifices to the Lord was that they must be “without blemish”, “perfect”. There has been only one man in the history of mankind to fulfill that requirement. Jesus.

Day 155 (6/4) – Numbers 19:1-22
Remind yourself as you read today's passage that these are shadows of the reality that is found in Christ. Think about what God was doing here. He was creating a shadow which needed to be sufficient to represent the infinite sacrifice of Christ. How does He do this? With detailed descriptions of the Tabernacle, the garments, the implements, the sacrifices and notions of clean and unclean, holy and unholy. Let us, therefore, ponder their significance to those of us who live in the blessings of that new covenant.

Day 154 (6/3) – Jeremiah 31:1-40; Hebrews 8:1-13
I suppose the most famous passage in Jeremiah is before us today, verses 31-34. It is the promise of God that He will make a new covenant. Our passage in Hebrews says it is a “better” covenant. May these truths you read from God’s Word today deeply bless you.

Day 153 (6/2) – Jeremiah 30:1-24; Hebrews 7:15-28
I am struck by these words: “Behold, the storm of the Lord!” and “Jesus, the guarantor of a better covenant.” Together, they bring to my knees to day in thanksgiving.

Day 152 (6/1) – Numbers 18:1-32; Hebrews 7:1-14
God provided so many things in the Old Testament that were shadows of that which would be fulfilled and perfected in Christ. Even the OT priests were only shadows. That included the incredible way that God provided a Melchizedek to prefigure Jesus.
