According to their accountant, Mr. and Mrs. Asu are in trouble.

Annual income:     $25,000 (this has been declining for years)

Annual spending:   $36,000 (this has been increasing for years)

Credit card debt:  $161,000

Total debt:         $700,000 (includes all their obligations)

Mr. and Mrs. Asu aren’t employed. Their income is provided by their children who are old enough to work, but are still living at home. Child 1, with the best job, pays $20,000 per year. Child 2, with the second best job, pays $5,000. The other two work but don’t pay anything. They are the parent’s favorites.

Mr. and Mrs. Asu have max’d out numerous credit cards and all of their income goes to make the minimum payments. But, they continually find ways to obtain new cards and keep spending more. In fact, this is the delight of their lives.

Their accountant has repeatedly told them that they have to stop doing this, but Mr. and Mrs. Asu find that irritating and think he is irrational. After all, they’ve been doing this for years and it has been working out so far.

In fact, they used to make up a budget. But since they never followed it, they realized that was just a silly waste of time.

But this year the accountant told them that credit was getting tight and they may not be able to open up any more new accounts.

That got Mr. and Mrs Asu’s attention.

After an evening of pondering their situation, Mr. And Mrs. Asu decided that the problem was that there wasn't enough money coming in. So, they told their children that they were facing a “fiscal cliff” and that if they didn’t come up with a solution, things could get really, really bad for the whole family.

To solve it, they suggested Child 1 pay $1000 more.

Child 1 suggested they stop spending so much.

The parents were horrified by this and called him “stingy” and “greedy”.

The first child protested by stating that he was already paying 80% of the load.

The other children started calling him names too and chanted “Pay your fair share! Pay your fair share!” The parents joined in.

Finally, after Child 1 was shamed into silence, Mr. and Mrs. Asu smiled at him and said they wanted to be fair about it all.

The decision would be put it to a vote, fair and square.

The choices:

1. Every child would pay more; or

2. The first child would pay the whole increase.

The children's votes were counted and the first proposal got one vote and the second proposal got three.

Mr. and Mrs. Asu were delighted. They had saved the family from plunging over the cliff and were excited to get back to their normal lifestyle.

They planned to celebrate by increasing this year's spending to $40,000.

Happy New Year ’13

Thank you for simplifying the matter in this creative way! I'm going to share this post on my Facebook page and hopefully it will help knock some sense into my friends who currently agree with Mr. & Mrs. Asu. :)

Dr. Tackett, do you believe there is hope for our country or do you believe it will only worsen until Christ's return?

    Thanks again,
    Caitlin

There is a large "remnant" in this country. If we were to begin to love our neighbor (in Truth) as Christ told us to, I think the Lord would greatly honor that. If my hope were in us alone, I would be depressed! :) No, I think there is much reason to hope for a revival and a reformation in our culture. But God's plan is to use His people. If we remain apathetic, then there isn't much promise ahead. Blessings! dt

This is a great parable indeed, if it were not so close to home. My step-father died in July leaving my now 80 year old mom without any insurance other than $37,000. Which she recently told me she had only $6,000 left. She said she paid off two credit cards which had no interest (ugh)and now she will be taking out a reverse mortgage. I know that the $1800 that she is getting from SS should be enough for her to live on, except extras. Her house is paid for, we encouraged them to do that when they started losing money a few years ago. She told me recently "I am 80 years old and I don't want to change my lifestyle." She did not appear to be arrogant in her tone, just naive. My sister who is helping her with finances lives the same way, so my input about all of this has fallen on deaf ears. So my mom wants a reverse mortgage so she can fix up her house and then let the reverse mortgage company have the house, nice of her huh? I am amazed that the economic downturn must not have been as bad as predicted as it has not changed the way people live. As my husband and I prepare for retirement we are enjoying finding ways to save money, but alas we must be in the minority. How can we want the government to trim and tighten when we ourselves are not willing to do the same. Thanks for the opportunity to sound off. Servant of the Living Lord.

Elegantly done. Very understandable. I hope many people share this message.

Another great reason why the remnant needs to get back to being a remnant. Every time we buy the lie of Manifest Destiny, that America is God's chosen nation, and there is no difference between "us" as Christians and "US" as Americans, we cripple our effectiveness, not to mention our faith. We have to remember that sometimes America is the Babylon that God calls us to "come out of her, my people, that ye share not in her sins." The debt is the tip of the iceberg, the symptom writ large of uncounted cultural choices that are steps away from God. "I brought up children, but they have rebelled against me." But the church can't play its proper role and help society unless we repent first ourselves. The church can't have a part-time job as civil religion (Amos 7:13).

  • Steve Bacon  - The adopted son and his friend
Our church operates a winter homeless shelter for men in Rhode Island. You might say we minister to the child the Asu's adopted from a foreign country to show their neighbors how benevolent they are. The adopted child and his friend moved into the basement of the Asu's home and do not work nor do they have any chores and yet they receive a monthly allowance from the Asu's to spend which ever way they choose. Ministering to this population has it's share of challenges to say the least and the primary one is the constant supply of State and Fed-funded programs ensnaring these men in a life of irresponsibility and dependance. The sobering reality is that they need the Lord and exposure to genuine followers of Christ willing to enter their world to lead them out from it.

When I was in Alaska this Fall, I heard of the same kind of "destruction" that is happening to the native Alaskans. Many no longer work or teach their children the "old skills" because they no longer need to work. They have lost any purpose in life. Alcohol and abuse and suicide are rampant. Oh, how we reap destruction under the feigned guise of benevolence! Thanks. dt]

    Dr,
just a question. I am drawing a blank, so I was curious as to what the 'Asu' name is referring to.
    Sorry for my ignorance.
