“But ask the animals, and they will teach you, or the birds of the air, and they will tell you; or speak to the earth, and it will teach you, or let the fish of the sea inform you. Which of all these does not know that the hand of the LORD has done this?” Job 12: 7-9
As we pulled off at one overlook after another and hiked to several more distant sites, the marvels at Arches and Canyonlands evoked a continual flow of “Wow!” and “Awesome!” and “Unnnn-believvvv-able!” (drawn out as if you were teaching a child how to say the word).
One of those was the grand-daddy of the balanced rocks.
It is called “Balanced Rock”.
It was hard to imagine how this thing stayed up. In fact, as we hiked around it, I will be honest that I was thinking about what direction I would run if I heard the first signs of a collapse.
It really looked like it was going to come down any minute.
In fact, a sister balanced rock not far away did just that in the winter of 1975.
It was called “Chip-Off-the-Old-Block”
As I shot it from various positions, I was thinking, “I may be taking the last picture of this thing!”
The “rock” is made of Slick Rock from the Entrada Sandstone Layer and just below it is the mudstone, the Dewey Bridge member of the Carmel Formation Layer.

As I usually do when I see things like this, I ask the Lord what we can learn from this. I take Job 12 seriously: “…or speak to the earth, and it will teach you…” Now, I don’t think God meant that we were to really hear rocks or trees talking to us, but the principle is that there is something here for us to learn. I already mentioned my belief that this is an overwhelming display of God’s power let loose in the judgment of the flood, but there are other things to learn.
In this case, I was reminded of the fact that Greece, at that moment, was teetering on the brink of collapse. She had allowed herself to run pell-mell down a socialistic path of more and more government programs financed on an ever-increasing mountain of debt. The reality is that eventually all of that folly leads to a day of reckoning. Other EU nations are trying to prop her up, but those are band-aids on a very serious infection.
But Greece isn’t alone in this foolishness. Portugal and Spain aren’t far behind. Britain, as well, is in huge debt.
And, here at home, our nation is following the same course.
You can build a house on rock or you can build a house on sand…or mudstone. Eventually, the reality of life will prove one to be wise and the other to be foolish.
What are you building upon?
What are WE building upon?
We can act like many Grecians who are rioting in the streets, yelling “More! More!” or we can wake up and realize that there is only so much milk that a cow can give.
Shaking the chicken will not give you any more eggs. It will probably just kill the hen and leave you with nothing.
I’m hoping to visit Canyonlands again some day. There are a lot of trails and sights that I want to see. I’m hoping that Balanced Rock will still be there.
But I’m not counting on it.

Del,
I keep meaning to ask you if you have ever read ‘The 5000 Year Leap’, by W. Cleon Skousen?
Saying that because, oh how it would fit into the ‘The Truth Project 2′.

This reminds me of a hike along the coast of Kaua’i, one of the islands I visited while vacationing in Hawaii a couple of years ago. At one particular spot, the ground looked solid, but the guide told everyone in the group to keep to the left. At the moment, I couldn’t understand why, but followed his instructions anyway. A little further down the path, I found out why. There was a large void under the large rock the group I was in walked on because of erosion from the Pacific. What looked like solid ground wasn’t. Our Lord and Savior is the Solid Rock we can always trust. This also gave the example of following those who are appointed over us. The guide kept the group where there there is a solid foundation. For me, this illustrated the need to follow those God appointed to watch over us.
For as long as I can remember, the Government (US) has been running budget deficits under both parties. The only recent surplus was under Bill Clinton. That took a huge amount of speculation on the dot com start-ups to run just a small surplus. I thought to myself, “What happens when this all ends and the economy goes south?” I never thought I would be living in a time where I would find out the answer to that question.
Dell,
In your introdution to the TrueU series you make a brief comment that we should keep the “young earth” concept in mind also.
I have taken the Truth Project class twice and have led a group of men through the TrueU, Does God Exist?. The later material does an excellent job of justifying the “older earth” concept – where can I find a “young earth” argument that just doesn’t make negative remarks about the science(?) of the “older earth” concept.
Thank you for your contributions to the “Truth Project” and “TrueU”.

I asked this question before, but maybe it was lost.
I noticed a picture of you when you entered the UAF and you were wearing your “wings” but another picture taken later on your career? your uniform does not displays any “wings”
I am/was a flyier Flight/Engineer on a C-141 Starlifter.
Just curios, why no “wings” …
Dan
[Thanks, Dan. I injured my shoulder and was grounded prior to finishing pilot training. I got a year of flying, though, and I'm grateful for that! dt]
I love the passage from Job that spoke to you as you saw this amazing rock formation. You always prompt deeper thoughts and I so appreciate that. Our small group has just finished The Truth Project and I immediately remembered this passage from that as well. Thank you for stretching me spiritually. I continue to enjoy your writings here on Truth Observed and look forward to your next teaching series. It cant’ come soon enough. May God bless you as you bless so many.
