“He will take a tenth of your flocks, and you yourselves will become his slaves. When that day comes, you will cry out for relief from the king you have chosen, and the LORD will not answer you in that day.” 1 Samuel 8:17-18
While I was at a conference in Nashville a few weeks ago, I met a very charming woman who wanted me to have a copy of her book. It was very small and not quite worthy of being called a book. However, since my daughter, who has a miniature Daschund has taken me to task for questioning whether or not her little Tashia could really be called a dog, I will go with the word “book”. The title of the book is “Me”…precisely “When I Accepted Me…”.
The book is a yearly devotional, with an affirming thought for each week. Each thought, as the book purports, is supposed to transform your life one week at a time. Let me read a few for you:
–Week 2: When I accepted me…I found inner peace;
–Week 14: When I accepted me…I started listening to and following my inner voice;
–Week 52: When I accepted me…I fell in love…with me!
From the Christian perspective, let me offer an opposite alternative:
–When I accepted Christ…I found inner peace;
–When I accepted Christ…I stopped listening to and following my inner voice;
–When I accepted Christ…I fell in love…with Him!
The world says it is all about you…God says it isn’t. And the wondrous thing is that when we “take up our cross and follow Him”, He gives us not only life…but life abundantly!
The world says this is foolishness.
Now, if one is caught up in a desperate frenzy of chasing the world’s standards and trying to make yourself into something that you simply aren’t and will never be, then there is wisdom in being content with who you are in those areas that are unchangeable.
But these words go beyond that…way beyond.
“When I accepted me…I started listening to and following my inner voice…”
I know people who have accepted themselves and their inner voice says ‘I don’t want to get a job’; or their inner voice says ‘I want to sleep in this morning rather than go to class’; or their inner voice says ‘I don’t want to throw anything away’ and they end up with a house so packed with junk that it takes a HazMat team to clean it out.
The point is that we have an inner nature that wants to get its own way. That has been true from the bad choice in the garden and it hasn’t changed. The heart of man is “desperately wicked” and somewhere, sometime, we need to say “no” to the inner voice. That flies in the face of Maslow and New Age and our “it’s all about me” world, but it’s the bold-faced truth.
We are fast descending into the tar pit of self-centeredness from which little escapes.
If it is all about me and my inner voice says that I want your stuff, then I expect to get your stuff.
Most of our modern day politicians, like marketing gurus, know the heart of man better than most and they can play your “inner voice” like a concert violinist. All they have to do is promise that they can get you want you want. And if I haven’t learned to say “no” to my inner voice then I will actually applaud them and cheer them on.
What they conveniently fail to tell you is that the cost is very, very high.
Marketing gurus simply make you a slave to consumer debt; the neo-politician simply makes you a slave.
God warned the children of Israel about setting up a king who did not live under God’s restraining Hand. The new king, God told them, would take 10% of their stuff and give it to those who support him and they would become his slaves. What is interesting is that they chose slavery…clamored for it.
Yesterday, this nation took a huge leap in paying dearly for another piece of gruel in the feed trough.
The high cost is not simply adding to a debt that is already insane, but it is the cost of becoming more and more the slave of the state. Don’t be fooled into thinking that there is something virtuous in stealing from the wealthy to line our own pocketbooks or pay our bills.
There is no virtue in making someone else a slave.
And there is no wisdom in continuing to pull spark plugs out of the economic engine.
Whatever a man sows, that will he also reap.
You cannot drain the profit of the wealthy and not expect to see the loss of jobs.
Pick the pocket of the wealthy and you will soon find that it is none but your own.
But, the political rhetoric is thick and will soon get thicker. Yesterday, one of our leaders said this: “Today, we have the opportunity to complete the great unfinished business of our society and pass health care reform for all Americans that is a right and not a privilege.”
I have unfortunate news for all of us.
This is NOT the “great unfinished business of our society” and if the king can make you believe that it is your right to take from others and give to you, then there will be no end to what you consider to be your “rights”.
Next on the list:
–car insurance for all;
–life insurance for all;
–internet access for all;
–cell phones for all;
–homes for all;
–food for all;
–clothes for all…
‘Free for all’ will soon become a ‘free for all’.
This is not a political problem.
This is a worldview problem.

For years I have felt that if the Church (Christian business men in particular) does not lead the way in providing solutions for out-of-control health care costs, the state will. Welcome to 2010! But whenever the state does something that the people should be doing for themselves it will be at great cost.
Responsibility and freedom go together.
Could it be that Christians are guilty of caring more about aquiring wealth for ourselves than caring for the poor? In this case particulary those who are in dire straits because of medical needs.
Could not agree more. We need to make sure we keep ourselves educated and focused on God’s word and not the media. I am a big believer in engaging & educating in your local community. Start from the bottom up. Thanks Del for all your hard work!
Thank the Lord and thank you Del for speaking His truth so clearly into this current mess created by our political leaders. This is definitely a worldview problem, a spiritual problem. Lord, please send revival to America!
A very insightful article. My husband and I are in week 6 of the Truth Project in our study group, and we are enjoying it immensely. What a timely and necessary study. It is sure helping us make some sense out of the insanity in our culture. Thank you so much for all your efforts. Please know that your work is appreciated. God Bless.
I Samuel 8:17-18 is so germane. I am deeply disturbed by the events of this past Sunday. I pray that the heritage of Liberty I have inherited can be passed intact to the next generation. It is so fragile. Thank you for your leadership..
Personally, I believe that health care for all is a very Christ-like way of serving the poor. However, I’m not sure of the overall impact this will have on our economy. I don’t think anyone really KNOWS. I guess we will find out.
First off anyone and everyone that needs Health Care gets Health Care in the U.S. So our Health Care providers are Christ-like. However when the king (government) takes our first fruits, and this is what they do and give it to all for Health Care it is stealing. Think about this, God never forces us to tithe or love each other. Instead He provides and wants us to show love when we bring our first fruits to him. So none of this Health Care Bill is Christ like, it is the State trying to take over, and this is not how God designed our society. They are overstepping there bounds of sphere sovereignty
It’s just basic economics and the power hungry just don’t get it. Well said Del! Their is so much sensationalism in our politicians - the main one has such a charismatic personality that it scares me when I listen to him - is this the way the anti-christ will sound - so convincing and promise the world with no cost on your personal skin to pay?
Del, Wish I could agree with your analysis of the health care bill. While I agree that the bill is a hodge-podge and a real mess, what do we do with 30,000,000 uninsured Americans (whose healthcare is “rationed”), or Americans whose insurance policies are cancelled when they actually have the temerity to get really sick, or the Americans whose pre-existing conditions prevent them from getting healthcare insurance at any cost? The insurance companies weren’t willing to extend coverage to all; the hospitals weren’t willing to extend adequate medical treatment to all (and most of them are not-for profit, religiously affiliated entities!). Even the AMA came to the belief that supporting health care reform makes sense. If we citizens in the private sector won’t take care of our brethren, then I’m happy to have govt force us to do so. I am convinced that it’s all about the money, and who has it. She who has it lives; she who doesn’t…well too bad for her. PS I find inner peace through my spirituality — not by acceptance of myself. Take care, Janet
Del, I have to agree with some of what you said and disagree with most of what you said. You are absolutely correct, most if not all of our problems are due to selfishness. My ego, my money and my stuff. I feel, and I think this is biblical, all I have was loaned to me by God’s good graces. I am to be a good steward with what I have been given. Here is where I begin to disagree with you. The small still voice in my head/heart is my conscience formed by my elationship with Christ. What is the greatest commandment (Matt 22:36) love God with your whole heart, love your neighbor as your self. The healthcare issue is about loving your neighbor not about losing your liberty. If Moses hadn’t lead the Isrealites out of Egypt, God would have found another to do that job. If it is our responsibility to take care of our neighbor, as the body of
Christ, and we fail to do so. Why can’t God use another avenue? (Matt 25:31-41) Feed the hungery, minister to the sick, when we have done this, it is as if we have done this for Christ. We are supposedly the greatest country on earth, that statement is the hieght of arogance and selfish pride. Especially when we don’t even care for the least of our brothers and sisters. God is not a capitalist or a communist, God is God. If you and I don’t care for the least of our bothers God will find someone else to do it. And we will answer to Him for what we have failed to do. Thanks for listening.
Del: This healthcare bill got me thinking about the application of Proverbs 19:15 which says “Laziness casts one into a deep sleep, and an idle person will suffer hunger(NKJV).” The state is requiring me to pay for a benefit for those who are too lazy to earn it. The state will also require health insurance companies to pay a 40% tax on plans that are worth more than $10,200 for single coverage and $27,500 for famiy coverage. This will be passed onto the employer and ultimately the employee. As a result, many employees who receive healthcare as a benefit will see their take-home pay diminished. Overall, the issue really isn’t about health care, it’s about the State controlling who gets what and who pays for it.
May I respectfully submit that when the goverment is in control of healthcare the chances of more injustice will go up, not down. Doing this the wrong way will lead to misery.
I don’t know a lot about the politics of health care, and being Canadian I may not even be qualified to speak, but I have a question. If we, as followers of Jesus, are living our lives as Jesus did and reaching out to those that Jesus did, how is it that we do not seem acquainted with those who, through no fault of their own, have inadequate health care? When Jesus was here, He provided the only health care the broken people around Him could have access to. He said nothing about laziness or deserving. In fact, he maintained that loving our neighbors, the second greatest commandment, involved caring for and paying for the health care not just of our friends, but our enemies (The good Samaritan). When do we get back to what was simple and important to Jesus ~ people? I know people w/severe health problems who are working jobs that aggravate their conditions and will, in at least one case, shorten their lives, all in order to keep their insurance. Lazy? She’s on call 24 hrs a day. Has a family of 4 kids. People are suffering. You can’t just say they aren’t,and make it so. I am chronically ill, and were it not for our medicare, I would not be able to afford the care I receive or the meds I take, and my illness prevents me from working. Lazy? I pour my life and energy into my family and have a ministry to abused/drug addicted women and children. So, what should the good Samaritan have done? What should Jesus have done for the thousands of poor, broken, sinful (um…like we were?) people who needed Him to heal them? What should we do to the thousands of poor, broken, sinful people that need healing and help? God has been graceful beyond compare to me. How can I do less for others?
Dr. Tackett,
Thank you for addressing this issue. I saw last night (for the 2nd time) The Truth Project about the State. It is clear to me that government is not the keeper of the people but I am not sure if government should do nothing. That tension is where I am.
Also, I had a sister in Christ rebuke me this week for my speaking out (on Facebook) against this healthcare bill. She feels that we should be more concerned about heavenly things and that it is our job to be obedient to the leaders God has put in place over us. Her reference was Romans 13. What is your view?
The “health care” issue is not the real issue. It is about control, and envy of anyone who has more than someone else (or “me” ). Christians have for centuries been helping the poor, including their medical needs. The case is no different in this country. Nowhere did Jesus say that the government must supply the needs of the poor by taking from the rich. He told us, as individuals, to take care of our “neighbor” - those around us who need help. A simple look at history will show the dangers of any powerful, controlling government. Medical care will only go down hill in this country as it has everywhere else the government has taken control of it. Do not be deceived. Del made a good analysis of the situation.
Del, thank you for your ministry. As one who has mentored people who were in bondage to the state, I truly feel and saw first hand that entitlement mentality is bondage. The Lord calls us to excellence and that requires motivation. It’s amazing to see on one hand how people are demotivated when they have so many things provided for them that they do not have to work for, that when they are offered a position that takes them to another economic level, their benefits cease, they won’t take it. Their security is the govt. not in God or their abilities. It is also another to see how many are demotivated because the economy is so bad that they aren’t being successful in their job search and spiral in depression. It is awesome to see people set free. When people take active steps in faith to overcome, put their faith in God, trust and obey, it’s astounding what can be accomplished. I fear that we may see a malaise in our country because of an enlarging entitlement mentality. This will not fair well in ingenuity, job creation and job retention. As believers, we are to help those in need. There isn’t an agenda, it should be motivated by Christ’s love. The government cannot provide that. They may have a well meaning subjective agenda, but in the big picture may create more substantial problems. Those who claim to be Christ followers but have no problem with a with an administration that is the most pro abortion we’ve seen in history, all in the name of ’social justice’ ought to be aware of God justice and that a little bit of yeast works through the whole dough. If all believers actually followed Christ, worship in a balance of spirit and truth, truly gave and helped the poor and widowed, didn’t rely on government to provide, imagine what a world we would have.
Just did week 3 last night, talk about timing! And unfortunately, the church has been asleep at the wheel and forgot its calling. It is not evangelical OR social issues, but live as Christ. Unfortunately, I think that the church has relinquished its responsibilities to the State, and the State likes the control.
“What is interesting is that they chose slavery…clamored for it.”
What is also interesting…some of the previous comments seem to prove rather than disprove the premise of the article.
Sad…
P.S. - Ever wonder how our ancestors survived without health insurance? (God has always had His “remnant”)
Wow I am so sorry but I really disagree with you. I love the truth project videos so much and I have normally agreed with your blogs that I’ve read but this and the last one are just messed up in my opinion. Everyone has the right to life and to have health care. I am pretty sure there are people in the States (I’m Canadian) who do have jobs but don’t have access to health care. I can understand opposing whatever in the bill has to do with abortion but I don’t get what you are trying to say about greediness and self-centredness. So people who want health care are greedy? Wouldn’t the rich people be the greedy ones since they have so much and don’t want to have to pay more so everyone can have health care? You guys already pay more per person for health care than we do in Canada. Also you talk about being slaves to the government but as it stands right now you guys are basically slaves to big business when it comes to health care, how is that any better? In Canada everyone has health care but there is no cell phones, clothes, homes for all just so you know. Health care is kind of something that everyone should be entitled to, I mean this is life and death we are talking about, not cell phones. I don’t know if this is just because I am Canadian but I am really disheartened by this. To me it seems that your politics are informing your opinions on this issue and NOT Christ. I really hope I don’t offend anyone, I just felt I had to comment. This does make me kinda sad. I am all about trying to live by the Bible and that’s why I love the truth project but I don’t think this viewpoint comes from the love of Christ. I guess this just shows that people will always disappoint but God never will!
While it sounds good to say “health care for all is a very Christ-like way of serving the poor” and “The healthcare issue is about loving your neighbor not about losing your liberty”, the problem here is Christ never had someone mandate this to others.
What is suggested would mean for us as individuals to go out and bless someone by paying their medical bill, and I am all for that!
BUT, do not confuse giving of your substance to someone less fortunate, and loving your neighbor by doing so, with a forced tax that you will have to pay, whether willingly or not.
If the government was truly giving to the poor and loving their neighbor, it would be coming from their own pockets, not everyone else’s. They would ask us, the citizenry, to help (kind of like a telethon), and if we respond, we respond. It is between God and us as individuals.
Charity (the love kind and the giving kind) cannot be forced and mandated, because if it is, it is no longer charity, and it is not fruitful.
The idea of healthcare for all is greatly appealing, especially for my family. Due to cirumstances beyond my control, there was a lapse in medical coverage for my family. When I re-applied, now having to pay out of pocket, my son was denied due to his Asthma, even though they have been covering him for the last 14 years. This has forced me to go to the ER everytime my son needs an inhaler and pay an astronomical amount out of pocket. However, this bill and our government does not sit well with me. I do not want to become dependent on (or slave to) our government. “…for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” (Joshua 24:15) I don’t like what is going on in our government at all, but I have Faith that God knows what He is doing. I will stay vigilant, but I won’t worry and let this consume me. I have peace in Christ!
I am very disappointed that this bill has passed, but I can not let it get me down. The estimated $7500 it is going to cost me every year does not belong to me, it belongs to God who entrusted it to me. The leaders of this Nation were appointed by God over me, probably to punish a selfish idolatrous people. Should our response be only to be selfish also? “May it never be!” This Bill IS just the tip of an iceberg, things WILL get worse; all the more reason to cling to our God and rightful King, considering the ‘freedoms’ won by US Patriots/Rebels a loss for the sake of Christ. I find when I focus on how my Country is being ruined by people with a progressive worldview, (and I know it is) my vision is obscured. I focus on my gun rights, my religious rights, my right to peruse happiness, my property rights, and I do not have time to preach Christ and Him crucified.
Del, I couldn’t have said it better.
Whatever the true number is, you don’t fix a chip in a Ming vase by smashing the vase and buy another one from a careless potter. You carefully glue the chip back in place. Our healthcare system is the best in the world and only needs some “tweaks” to fix it. Government is a “careless potter”; it’s also the largest health insurance provider in the country already and FAR more flawed and expensive than the private sector. We don’t need more of that.
Representative in Congress Abe Lincoln stood up when a fellow proposed the Congress vote some small aid for a widow he knew that was having a tough time. He said that none of them had the authority to spend public money for such a cause. However, he proposed that the members themselves pool their private contributions to help the lady out. That didn’t go over very well. It’s a lot easier to rob someone else to prove how “compassionate” you are with HIS money than to do the Christian thing and step up to the task yourself.
If we could keep government OUT of our pockets, there would be a lot more available for private (no overhead) aid to people who truly need it by people who are familiar with them. THIS is what Jesus told us to do. He didn’t ask Caesar to do it, he told US to do it.
Christian givers, not Robbin Hood in a tie, are the ones who do our Father’s bidding and will win the prize of everlasting life.
Thank you, Jesus!
I agree with your assertion. I hope you are not merely preaching to the choir here. I honestly feel like the “slaves” will go on till the end of time clamoring for a king to rule over them, harshly yes, but all the while promising to keep their bellies full. In the end, that’s all slaves seem to want, full bellies, not freedom.
Janet,
Thank you for your eloquent response. I did want to make a couple of points though. I am in the insurance industry and I infrequently sell health insurance as an obligation to my policy holders. While it does not represent a large part of my income, I do know a good bit about it. First, health insurance companies are one of the most heavily regulated companies in the US. It is, and always has been, illegal for an insurance company to cancel a policy due to claims. So, you are misguided on that point(I’m sure due to all the democratic rhetoric) . Also, health insurance is like any other type of insurance. You must purchase it before you need it. You can’t buy auto insurance after you have a wreck, you can’t buy home insurance once your house is burning and you can’t buy life insurance after you are dead. Therefore you can’t buy health insurance after you are ill. Yes, there are those that may have never had the chance to buy it before they became ill, but it is mostly very healthy people who choose to spend their money on new cars, clothes, shoes, boats etc. and then cry that the big bad insurance companies won’t issue a policy when they develop the inevitable and expensive illness.
You did not mention the huge profits the insurance companies make. President Obama said he was going to “cut the fat” from the insurance companies. I would urge you to do some research on your own. You will see that insurance companies typically report a profit in the neighborhood of 3% to 6%. Compare that with the like of any Fortune 500 Company and you will see that this is a ridiculously small profit.
I’m not saying that there are not problems in the industry; there are. However, to give it to the US government, 1/6th of the entire US economy, is political and economical suicide! Our economy cannot take it and it is just one more step in the direction of total socialism…or worse.
God Be With Us,
Philip
I would submit to the person who mentions Matt 22:36 that Christ meant this as a PERSONAL commandment. Christ is saying YOU love your neighbor as yourself.
This can be by you donating your time, money or talent to those that need it. This is the essence of charity (the very definition of loving your neighbor). However, forced charity is not charity at all and, therefore, does not conform to Christ’s command.
Christ gave freely. There are two operative words here: gave and freely. If we want to be like Christ, we need to do the same.
He gave, so we should give. We should give without worrying about how much our brothers and sisters are or are not giving.
He gave freely, so we should also give freely and willingly. We should never use force (including using the government) to extract from others what is rightfully theirs.
Forced charity is not charity at all…it is simply theft. Robin Hood was a thief.
The comment you made is that Christians are giving their 10% to the government rather than to God to do the healing of the nation, because of selfish needs. But I think that oversimplifies things a great deal.
Del, as a former collection agent of American citizens, I heard a great deal of the plight of poor Americans caught in the spinning vortex that is debt and depression. Much of that debt and depression centered around unexpected and uninsured medical costs. And I prayed for them constantly. And sometimes we prayed together. But the solution wasn’t ever made available to them, and many had to give up on their debts, and that’s a painful experience for someone.
Now, I am Canadian. Luckily I don’t have to worry about being part of this issue from a political standpoint, Del, because I am Canadian. And out of my taxes the government of my country pays for 98% of my healthcare needs. And this service I would not give up. I don’t think any Canadian would. It’s done nothing but save the lives of our people for generations now. It’s something that is a well protected institution in our country. If someone proposed removing our universal health care, there would be riots. This isn’t about a socialist ideal, or giving more than is necessary to the government, or counting the government as a saviour. Believe me there is more than our fair share of complaints about the system as it is. But this is how we view this. We view it as a system, not a replacement for God in our daily lives. In fact it is one of the avenues God uses to take care of us. You say we have a king, and these are the things he will do, and list all these things he does. Well, one of the things he can do, seeing as we have no choice but to have one, is help families and help save lives. There’s nothing wrong using the king to do something good. And healthcare is a very useful system that was ingeniously figured out by non politicians and implemented by politicians. And there isn’t any evil in it. As was stated before: God is not a communist or a capitalist. God is God. And there’s far too much touting that God is something else politically and economically these days, especially in America.
Mr. Tackett,
Not only do I applaud you for telling the truth in love, but also appreciate you for working to reveal the lies that society ignorantly - or otherwise - accepts. The Truth Project teaches people how to think for themselves instead of grasping at whatever “looks” good on the surface. People don’t know what they don’t know, and we cannot slack-off in any effort made to reveal lies and warn the people of snares ahead.
While we grieve the direction of our nation, shall we also celebrate the faithful promises of our King? Halleluiah!
To say that those who do not have health insurance because they are lazy is not only ignorant, it is prejudicial. My son is 9, and was taken off state health insurance when we started making too much money. He has muscular dystrophy and other preexisting conditions. We applied for private health insurance and were denied. The state has of yet, provided great coverage for my child, although it may be inconveinent at times, I can rely on patience and understanding to deal with things which may inconveinence me.
I think we’d have fewer incidents of me, me, me with the poor if we had fewer mine, mine, mine with the wealthy. I suspect our Creator would take issue with both. The growing gap between rich and poor, the astounding concentration of wealth at the top is problematic. It puts a large group of people in the position of having to rely on charitable giving from the top to meet the basic needs of their family. Humiliating. Especially with so many at the top controlling price points for food, insurance, clothing, property and the like. Yes, Christians are giving. That’s not the issue. What percentage of practicing Christians make up the wealthy in our country? I don’t know. It does disappoint me to see Christianity, or any religion, being used to curb the poor from standing up against obscene economic imbalances. It takes on the feel of using religion as a tool for oppression. Where are the messages on how God feels about Goldman Sachs using their relationship with the Treasury to borrow money for pennies and use that money to make wads of cash through investing that money in US Securities? That’s robbing the tax payer blind and they are doing so for their executives multi-million dollar lifestyles. I’m disappointed to see Focus on the Family missing the boat.
I’d like to add, I didn’t mean to imply by my last post that you are attempting to oppress the poor, Del. I meant my words as I wrote them, that is gives the message that feeling. My comments are sincere and meant in a constructive way.
