I am NOT still in Custer State Park, but it has been a whirlwind since we returned and I thought I should wrap that trip up.
The park is impressive and we could have spent weeks there. To the south of our camp was a loop titled “Wildlife Drive”. It took us about 2 hours, extended because of our frequent “gawking” stops, but more than anything because of the buffalo herds that had decided to use the road as a picnic area. You just don’t get out of the car and “shoo” away a hundred buffalo…especially when many of the cows were nursing their calves.
These are magnificent creatures and I find that I can sit and watch them even if they aren’t really doing much of anything except blocking the road. Come to think of it, I suppose there isn’t a large repertoire of things that buffalo do…but I enjoy looking at them.

We saw elk, antelope, prairie dogs, wild burros, birds, butterflies, and more & more buffalo…in the road, of course.
This was buffalo kingdom.
To the north of our camp was the famous Mount Rushmore. I want to talk more about this phenomenal rock sculpture at a later date, but suffice it to say, it was quite awesome.

Not far from Mount Rushmore is the Crazy Horse Monument.
Since my wife is of Cherokee descent and I of Iroquois, this was of special interest. Crazy Horse also deserves a separate blog some day.

Well, as rain falls to earth and spring follows winter, my week off came to an end and it was back to the saddle where it appeared that everything had begun to spin ever more rapidly.
I don’t know about where you live, but in Colorado it has been so cool this summer that it feels as if we are moving quickly into fall and that this short summer is coming to a rapid close. I hope it doesn’t end, however, before you get to take some time off and get away…even if it is just a weekend jaunt somewhere. Go enjoy God’s amazing world!
Thanks for tuning in and letting me share my vacation with you!

Custer State Park is a true gem. We have been there a couple of times and recommended it to many people. The beauty and variety of God’s creation is all around you. Thanks for bringing back some happy memories.
We lived in Custer SD for several years, and still didn’t get to see all there is to see in the area. It is an awesome place, one of God’s most scenic creations. Seeing the view after hiking to the top of Harney Peak is one of my most memorable experiences!
We enjoy the buffalo here in Leavenworth, KS but I guess we’ll have to make it up to Custer State Park someday as the ones here don’t seem as big. We visited Mount Rushmore years ago and saw Crazy Horse from a distance but I guess we’ll need to do it again someday with the kids! God bless you and thanks for your ministry.
I grew up in Rapid City and always took the Black Hills for granted. I didn’t truly appreciate their unique scenic beauty until I moved away in 1988. I moved back to Rapid City in 2001 and I certainly don’t take the Black Hills for granted anymore. I ride my Harley in “The Hills” every chance I get and I am always amazed at God’s creative handiwork. Creation truly declares the glory of God.
